A handpainted goat and sheep leather lamp shade made in the traditional Tholu Bommalata style of Andhra Pradesh — the centuries-old shadow-puppet craft in which fine leather is treated until it is translucent, then painted by hand. It stands on its own over a tealight, and the light glows out through the design.

This one carries a cow — among the most enduring motifs in Indian art, and a gentle, familiar presence in a home.

The shade is gently tapered — 3 inches across the top, widening to 5 inches at the base, and 6 inches tall — so it sits stably on a shelf, mantel, side table or mandir without needing a stand.

Why you'll love it

  • A genuine traditional craft — Tholu Bommalata, hand-painted on translucent leather.
  • Glows beautifully — stand it over a tealight and the design lights up from within.
  • Free-standing — 3in top, 5in base, 6in tall. No stand or fitting needed.
  • Handpainted, not printed — every piece is individually made.
  • A gift with a story — few people have seen this craft before.

Perfect for

Housewarmings and new homes, Diwali and festive gifting, shelves, mantels, side tables and mandir corners, and anyone who appreciates traditional Indian craft.

Frequently asked questions

What size is it?
It's a tapered shade: 3 inches across the top, 5 inches across the base, and 6 inches tall. Small enough for a shelf or side table, large enough to be noticed.

How does it light up? Is a tealight included?
It stands over a tealight, and the light glows out through the translucent leather. A tealight isn't included — and we'd recommend an LED or flameless one: it gives the same warm glow, and keeps an open flame away from the leather entirely.

Is it safe to use a real candle?
We don't recommend it. Leather and open flames don't mix — please use an LED or flameless tealight instead.

What is it made of?
Goat and sheep leather, hand-treated until translucent and then hand-painted, in the traditional Tholu Bommalata manner. Please note this is a leather product.

What is Tholu Bommalata?
A traditional leather shadow-puppet craft from Andhra Pradesh, in which hide is treated until translucent, then hand-painted. The same technique gives these lamps their glow.

Do you offer gift wrapping?
Yes, free of charge, on request. Just mention at checkout that it's a gift.
